The Real Cost of Artificial Insemination in the UK

What we learned about fertility treatment costs – and how it led us to create the Maia Baby Fertility Kit.

Our Story

We had no idea how expensive and confusing fertility treatment could be until we were in it. The more we researched artificial insemination (IUI), the more overwhelmed we felt. Every clinic said something different, and the advertised prices never told the full story.

Some quoted £1,000 per cycle—but that didn’t include monitoring, medication, or donor sperm. IVF was mentioned almost immediately, but with prices starting at £5,000 per round, it wasn’t an option for us.

When we couldn’t find one—we made it. If you're considering starting at home, this step-by-step insemination timing guide is a helpful first read.

What is artificial insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment where sperm is inserted directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. It’s often used by couples experiencing unexplained infertility, solo parents, or same-sex couples.

There are two common types of insemination:

  • Intracervical Insemination (ICI) – sperm is placed at the entrance to the cervix
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – sperm is inserted directly into the uterus using a catheter

Clinics typically offer IUI, while ICI can be safely done at home with the right tools and guidance.

For a clinical breakdown, visit the HFEA guide to IUI.

Artificial insemination cost breakdown (UK)?

Some clinics advertise IUI from £1,000, but the actual price is often much higher once you include medications, blood tests, scans, and sperm prep. IVF can cost upwards of £5,000 per cycle. NHS IUI is rarely available unless you meet strict criteria. In contrast, the Maia Baby Kit costs just £90–£130 per cycle.

What’s included in private IUI?

A single IUI cycle typically includes an initial consultation, cycle monitoring (scans), the insemination procedure itself, fertility medication if required, and donor sperm if needed. These costs can quickly add up to £1,600–£3,000 or more.

To avoid surprises, ask clinics for a full price breakdown in advance—including medication, monitoring, and post-treatment reviews.

What does the NHS cover?

NHS-funded IUI is extremely limited and largely dependent on your age and postcode. Most people will not qualify without meeting strict criteria. The focus of NHS fertility services is more commonly on IVF.

If you’re under 40, you may qualify for a fertility assessment, but many trusts require proof of multiple unsuccessful privately-funded IUI cycles before offering IVF. Over 40s are usually not eligible for NHS-funded IUI.

Why we didn’t pursue IVF

We were surprised by how quickly IVF was introduced in our consultations. And while it may offer higher success rates, it came with:

  • More invasive procedures
  • Hormonal stimulation
  • Egg retrieval under anaesthetic
  • Emotional toll and medical risks
  • Significantly greater cost: often £5,000–£7,500+ per cycle

Clinics often market IVF as the most effective route, but for many people—especially those with regular cycles or unexplained infertility—less invasive approaches should be tried first.

Why we created the Maia Baby Fertility Kit

We needed a simpler, more affordable way to try insemination—without hormones, clinic appointments, or hidden fees.

So we built it.

The Maia Baby Fertility Kit offers:

  • Medical-grade components
  • Easy-to-follow instructions
  • No clinical visits or invasive treatments
  • All for just £90–£130 per cycle

It gave us control, calm, and confidence. For those just starting their trying-to-conceive journey, it’s the step we wish we’d had.

IUI vs Maia Baby Kit

Compared to private IUI, the Maia Baby Kit is:

  • Drastically more affordable
  • Completely non-invasive
  • Performed in the comfort of your own home
  • Designed for early-stage TTC couples

If your cycles are regular and you’re not using strong fertility meds, our kit offers a gentle, cost-effective first step.

Where your money actually goes

Private IUI pricing can feel unclear or incomplete. Here's what makes up the full cost:

  • Consultations and diagnostics
  • Ultrasound and blood hormone monitoring
  • Sperm prep and lab processing
  • Medications
  • Donor sperm sourcing (if needed)
  • Follow-up visits and admin fees

We recommend requesting a full price sheet before starting, with written confirmation of what's included. The British Fertility Society provides guidance on cost expectations and ethical clinic standards.

Success rates: IUI, IVF, and home insemination

Success rates vary by method, age, and underlying health. IVF offers the highest per-cycle success rate (30–40%), but also the highest cost and complexity. IUI typically offers 10–20%. At-home ICI with the Maia Baby Kit averages around 10–15% with proper ovulation timing.

Common Questions

Can I use the Maia Baby Kit with donor sperm?
Yes, our kit is compatible with donor sperm, whether fresh or frozen and thawed properly.

How do I know when to use the kit?
The included instructions walk you through ovulation tracking using LH tests and physical signs.

Is home insemination safe?
Yes—if you’re using clean, medical-grade components and have no underlying fertility conditions. Always speak to your GP if you have questions.

How many cycles should I try?
Many couples try 3–6 cycles of ICI before considering other options. Lying down after insemination may also support success during these cycles.

Summary

When we started our fertility journey, we were shocked by how expensive and unclear the options were.

The Maia Baby Kit was born from that frustration. It’s not a replacement for IVF or medical supervision—but it is a credible, accessible first step.

We created it because we needed it. And now, we hope it helps others like us.

If you're looking for a low-pressure, affordable way to try artificial insemination at home—without £1,000 clinic invoices—we're here to support you.
